Brief

You have been asked to produce a moving storyboard to aid in a pitch for an adventure game aimed at players aged 16-25. The developers are producing a narrative based around a wrongly-convicted fugitive.

The storyboard should serve as an opening sequence for the game where the protagonist escapes from his/her captors. You are free to set the opening in any time period and location but must justify your choices as this will inform the rest of the game. The moving storyboard must be executed in pencil/pen and ink, run for 30 seconds and indicate dialogue where necessary.

Brainstorming

Below are two images of ideas me and my class have brainstormed for our storyboard.

The photo above shows the work our class did while brainstorming the different locations, scenarios and characters. Ideas where shouted out as our teacher wrote on the board and we ended up creating some very good and funny ideas to choose from.

As you can see in the image above I had quite a range of ideas I had thought up.

Top 3 Choices

  • Group of teenagers – in an underground sewage plant – trapped and fleeing from a mysterious human figure.
  • Bounty Hunter – in a fortified city – trying to run from a job gone wrong.
  • red haired women – in a cult hangout – attempting to flee from being sacrificed by the cult.

research & techniques

I found this storyboard comparison of the Disney Pixar film Monsters Inc. on YouTube.

Positives
  • you can understand the full film very well
  • areas of colour have been added to show certain objects
  • there aren’t too many frames which reduce production time
negatives
  • Production time will have longer than preferred

Describe elements

Tone – Tone defines the brightness of colour and is mostly used to create contrast, an illusion of form and dramatic atmosphere.
Colour – In visual mediums colour is the element that decides which emotion to represent towards the viewer(s) as well as mood, atmosphere, movement and form.
Line – This is the foundation of drawing and is used to define shape, pattern, growth and form.
Rhythm – An artist can create rhythm in a painting by repeating certain strokes or using a different colour to highlight a motion. The rhythm of a painting is where an artist draws your attention and then leads your eyes down the desired path as you view the painting closely.
Form – Form relates to the physical shape and the space it occupies.  This term generally refers to 3D Design and architecture but is applicable when mentioning the illusion in 2D art.
Shape – Shape can be natural or man-made, regular or irregular, abstract or representational, positive or negative and decorative or symbolic.

Survey

As a group we came up with a set of questions we would like to ask people and so we worked together to write down a set of questions to provide us the answers we needed to get started on this new project. This is picture of the survey we sent out. Sending this survey out was a good idea as it gave us both some qualitative and qualitative research and an insight into what the general public expect from new video games.

survey example

Here is a summarized response we got from the majority of answers we received.
